Hinderwell is a village in the Scarborough district of the county of North Yorkshire. It enjoys beautiful countryside just a mile from the coast and had its own railway station until 1958. In the mddle of the 1800s it held its own race meetings, including an important meeting on Wednesday 9th November 1859 when the feature race was the Hinderwell Steeplechase which was won by Blemiah.  There is a record of a further meeting on a 3 mile course over 2 extended fields on the edge of the village on Saturday 6th September 1862. Racing continued annually, usually on Easter Monday, but after the National Hunt Racing Committee introduced new rules in 1870 point to point meetings were held and continued well in to the 20th century.
